Tip of the Week - June 12, 2018 - All Packed? Make Sure Your Vehicle is Vacation-Ready
/The summer travel season is upon us and many of us are taking well-deserved vacations. If your trip is by car, truck or SUV, be sure your vehicle is road-trip ready!
“Driving for a long period of time in hot summer weather can be rough on vehicles, particularly if they are not well, or recently, maintained,” said CSLEA Foundation Chair Kenny Ehrman. “No one wants their vehicle to break down along the roadside and then be inconvenienced for hours for possible towing and repairs.”
How can you prepare your vehicle for your road trip?
- Check the air pressure in all tires, including the spare
- Replace dry, cracked windshield wipers
- Inspect battery and battery cables
- Inspect brake pads and linings for wear
- Change the oil and filter if needed
- Check fluids
- Test the headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers and interior lights
Pack an emergency kit including
- Jumper cables
- Flashlight
- Blankets
- Hazard triangle, road flares,
- Screwdrivers and wrenches
- First aid kit
- Water for both the car radiator and your family
- High-calorie, non-perishable food
“Be sure your cell phone is charged, and you have a charger with you! Stay alert, don’t become distracted and stay within the speed limit,” said Ehrman. “We want families to enjoy their vacations together, with a little planning and taking things in stride, there’s a better chance of arriving safely, having a great time, and returning home with great memories.”
