Tip of the Week – November 21, 2016 – Remove Garage Door Openers from Your Vehicles Parked Outside Your Home

As we approach the holiday shopping season, it doesn’t hurt to remind residents to remove their garage door openers from cars that are parked in the driveway or out in the street.   A garage door opener laying on a seat, or on the dash or visor, is an open invitation for car burglars to quickly become thieves inside your garage and your house.

It is easy for someone to break into your car, rummage through it, grab your garage door opener and help themselves to items in your garage, and eventually in your house where your holiday shopping sits waiting to be wrapped.  The more barriers, or layers of security, you can put between you and the bad guy, the more likely he is going to give up and move on.  Protect yourself with this one simple step.   And, if you can park your vehicle in a garage, that’s better yet.

If you must park your vehicle outside of the garage, park it in an area that has good lighting and in an area that is visible from a door or window of your home.  If you have a car alarm, use it.
