Tip of the Week - October 12, 2015 - Verify Who’s Calling

Despite our attempts to keep strangers or solicitors from calling, scammers still find a way to get a hold of us.  A phone scam in Santa Barbara County this month involves a caller claiming to be a "deputy marshal" accusing citizens of skipping jury duty and informing them an arrest warrant has been issued.  The scammer tells the citizen he can clear the warrant and demands payment over the phone or requests a pre-paid credit card.  If someone calls you demanding money, for what appears to be an "official" reason, get the name and phone number of the person calling and call the agency they claim to represent.
